COURSE OBJECTIVE

There is increasing consensus that climate change is real and that its causes and impacts must be governed to preserve the environment and life on earth. This course will help to answer numerous questions having serious concerns for climate change. The course will introduce students to the international principles that forms the basis for climate agreements and the current international legal framework on climate change. To help students study and analyze the IPCC reports, the developments in UNFCCC, Kyoto protocol and Paris agreement negotiations. To help students understand the challenges and opportunities for India while complying with international climate agreements and implementing domestic climate actions. To encourage the students to discuss the relevance and trends in the emerging global climate change litigations.

COURSE OUTCOME

On successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

• 1) Critically assess the causes of climate change and distinguish its present and future impacts at the local regional and global level.
• 2) Understand the International and National climate change law and policy, the fundamental legal principles, rules and institutions under it.
• 3) Comment and critically appreciate the new legal documents governing environment and development issues in the light of climate change.
• 4) Explain the different carbon emission reduction mechanisms including market-based policy under the cimate regime and identify their challenges and opportunities.
• 5) Address the social, economic and climate change concerns in a balanced manner in their profession.
